| | | ARE YOU USING CANCER CAUSING PRODUCTS? | | - AIR FRESHENERS: The whiff of fragrance you spray into your house with pleasure often contains harmful toxins napthelene and formaldehyde. Hence, it's best not to use any air fresheners because you will never know the detailed composition of any. Instead, burn essential oils. They have a more pleasing, comforting smell and come in the widest of variety. For best results, get an aroma therapy holder and burn the essential oil of your choice in that. You could also opt for naturally scented potpourri or naturally scented candles made of beeswax only, strictly with cotton wicks.
- PAINTING MATERIAL: Acrylic paints, solvents, permanent markers and sometimes even sketch pens contain carcinogens. Paint and ceramic colours often have chromium and Manganese dioxide that can cause health damage. Enamels are dangerous too as many of them are lead based and contain cadmium and nickel. Hence, use lead-free enamels if you are able to get your hands on them. In general, while using possibly toxic art supplies, you must take precautions like tying a scarf around your face and keeping the space well ventilated. Also, properly dust the place each day so that the toxic components do not stay in your space for days.
- PLASTIC CONTAINERS FOR MICROWAVE HEATING AND STORAGE: Heating food in plastic containers in a microwave is seriously avoidable. And this rule applies to your “microwave safe†containers as well. Because the “microwave safe†label simply means that the container will not melt when microwaved, it does not mean that it won't percolate the plastic toxins and chemicals into your food being heated. So, ditch your plastic ware and get microwave safe glass ware for microwave use. They can be safely used for years on end. Also, do not store hot food and food that is oily in plastic containers, as these foods encourage the transfer of plastic toxins. Especially avoid using old plastic containers and the take away/restaurant delivery containers as they are strictly meant for one time use only. Invest in steel containers and glass boxes and jars for storage. You can also use ceramic ware for the same.
